Guards wounded in armed robbery

A GANG of 10, armed with assault rifles, wounded two security officers during a botched robbery in Verulam yesterday morning.

At least 40 casings from AK47s, R5 rifles and 9 mm pistols were found at the scene.

The guards from Reaction Unit South Africa were responding to an alarm from a BP garage in Umdloti Beach Road at 2.30 am.

Security company director Prem Balram said while some of the gang attacked the safe inside with an angle grinder, the rest positioned themselves outside.

A petrol station employee managed to activate a silent alarm and Balram’s employees arrived two minutes later. They came under heavy fire immediately.

Guard Deon Chinian, first on the scene, returned fire six times before he was knocked unconscious with the butt of a firearm. His vehicle had eight bullet holes. His bullet-proof vest, gun and control room radio were taken.

Chinian’s colleague Ruba Reddy arrived soon after and he was shot five times through the windscreen. He is in a critical condition at Umhlanga Hospital.

In the process, one of the robbers tried to disable a CCTV camera, but instead deactivated the automatic doors and locked the other gang members inside.

“The suspects then abandoned the safe, broke down the huge glass door, grabbed cash from the till and fled,” said Balram in a statement.

One of the getaway vehicles was traced to a recent hijacking in Durban.
