Gun Free SA ‘will not close down’

2008-12-07 00:00

“There is no way Gun Free SA (GFSA) will close down,” said Pamela Crowsley, chairwoman of GFSA Gauteng.

“It has become a household name in SA and is the only gun proliferation organisation in the country. We are an essential NGO,” she added.

This comment came after The Witness reported last week that the KwaZulu-Natal branch of the organisation was due to close at month end because of funding issues.

Crowsley said that although many international sponsors are pulling out of the organisation, it is still committed to putting an end to gun-based violence in SA. “We will continue what we do, even if it is on a voluntary basis.”

Lack of funding has already forced the organisation’s Gauteng branch to operate on a voluntary basis and has caused its national structures to collapse, forcing it to operate only at provincial levels.

GFSA is currently drafting a document pleading with toyshops in SA not to stock toy guns this festive season.
