Gun thugs attack policeman at home

2008-01-02 00:00

A policeman and an unidentified bottle store owner were shot in separate incidents just before 9 pm on Monday night.

According to SAPS spokeswoman Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen, 38-year-old off-duty policeman Inspector Owen Ngubane was shot twice by four armed men who broke into his home in D Section Umlazi.

She said Ngubane had been watching television at around 9 pm when he was confronted by the four armed men, who demanded his firearm. When he told them that he did not have one, they shot him twice and made off with two cellphones and a hi-fi system.

Ngubane was fortunate that paramedics were close by, said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha. He said paramedics rushed to the scene and managed to stabilise the wounded officer before taking him to St Augustine’s Hospital.

Both Botha and Veldhuizen confirmed that Ngubane, who underwent an emergency operation, was in a serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating but no arrests have been made.

The second incident took place outside the Kloof Liquor Store on Old Main Road. Veldhuizen said the owner, his girlfriend and a security guard were sitting in a car outside the shop when they were approached by six suspects. Two had pistols and one had a knife.

She said they had pulled the owner out of the car, took R50 000 from him and then shot him in the arm and the chest. They fled in a Silver Conquest. The owner was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition, according to ER24’s Derek Banks.

Veldhuizen said a case of armed robbery and attempted murder were opened.
