‘Gung-ho’ credit controls cause division

2011-07-05 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) is disappointed in the Msunduzi Municipality’s new credit control rules for landlords as well as the lack of consultation on the policy.

PCB chief executive officer Melanie Veness said the municipality has chosen, once again, to implement policies that affect businesses and residents without proper consultation. Veness said that organised business objected to the manner of its implementation and to the policy itself.

“Not only did the municipality fail to consult properly on this issue, but they seem to have very little regard for the impact that it will have on the Pietermaritzburg community,” she said.

Veness called the policy impractical and said it has far-reaching implications. “It seems to have been rushed through without proper consideration.” She said all the roleplayers in the city need to work together to get Pietermaritzburg back on track. “This kind of gung-ho approach creates unnecessary division,” said Veness.
