2012-12-05 00:00

UMDONI Municipality licence offices in Scottburgh were robbed of a substantial amount of money yesterday morning when two armed men forced their way in and helped themselves to the cash register takings.

Police spokesperson Zandra Wiid said the incident happened at 7.30 am. The robbers, who were carrying handguns, held up a security guard, forced staff to open a security gate and plundered the till.

“The robbers also disarmed the guard and then fled on foot. A substantial amount of money was taken,” said Wiid.

No shots were fired and no one was injured.

Umdoni Municipality spokesperson Sli Zama would not disclose how much money was taken.

Sources said the staff who were present during the robbery were taken for trauma counselling after the incident.

Police from surrounding stations and units, the Umzinto K9 unit and a police helicopter searched the area for suspects. A business robbery case has been opened and no arrests have yet been made.
