Gypseys arrive in PMB next week

The band arrives in Pietermaritzburg next week. The South African foursome, who showcase their music with a predominantly blues/rock feel, are a special event on the Maritzburg Musicians’ Club calendar.

The three Wilsons (Gareth, Tammy and Paul) and Thys Smit make up this four-piece outfit, which had its first release — Sweet Voodoo — in 2004. Since then, they have performed extensively around South Africa, as well as in Mozambique and Botswana, and have three studio albums to date.

Although they don’t like being labelled “a political band”, Southern Gypsey Queen has strong messages for the world around them: “We have something to say and we would rather sing about positive things in South Africa, than be like the others who focus on the negatives.”

The band will be at the Red Door on Tuesday. Visit for more on the band.
