H1N1: Dept calls for people to be vaccinated

2010-05-06 00:00

THE KWAZULU-NATAL Health Department has called for people to go for H1N1 influenza vaccinations.

Department spokesperson Chris Maxon said the vaccine has been available since April 6 with the World Health Organisation (WHO) donating three million doses of the vaccine, although there was a delay in initial supplies.

Maxon said the second phase of the campaign covers front-line healthcare workers, pregnant women, children under 15 years with HIV/Aids and people receiving treatment for lung and heart conditions.

They are given a combination of the vaccine for H1N1 and seasonal influenza.

It is expected that the second round will cover the rest of the population, including the South African Police Force and the National Defence Force and those with chronic conditions.

The department’s HOD Dr Sibongile Zungu said the delay in the supply of the vaccine has hit the private sector the worst as pharmaceutical companies cannot meet the demand.
