Hackland murder judgment expected

2014-10-16 00:00

THE day of judgment has arrived for two men charged with the murder and robbery of Ixopo farmer Peter Hackland (61).

Hackland was shot dead on Cromleigh farm on May 7 last year.

The accused, Nkosinathi Mngadi (29) and Sifiso Ngubane (24) of KwaMashu are also charged with assaulting Hackland’s daughter, Louise Hartwig, and farm employee Margaret Fennell.

State advocate Melanie Naicker is asking for a conviction on all the charges. However, defence attorneys Kelvin Singh and Shaheen Seedat have called into question the evidence of various state witnesses identifying the accused as the culprits. They included Hackland’s daughter.

The defence also attacked the fairness of a police identity parade after the accused complained that they “stood out like sore thumbs” among people who were vastly different in appearance.

For example, one of them had a mohawk hairstyle at the time, but there was allegedly no one else on the parade with a similar haircut.

Judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati, sitting with assessor, Fred Heuer, is expected to give judgment today.
