Hammond is the lone KZN Midlands player for Five Nations tournament

THE 2007 South African men’s hockey player of the year, Tommy Hammond, is the only KZN Midlands representative in the national team named to do battle in the Five Nations tournament in Potchefstroom from Sunday.

SA drew 1-1 with Great Britain in the International Series yesterday, and SA Hockey Association president Dave Carr announced the team two hours after the final whistle.

The Five Nations is an historic event for SA as it includes the top four teams in the world — Germany, Australia, the Netherlands and Spain, plus the hosts.

Inspirational Midlands captain Darryn Gallagher, who is nursing a back injury , has been left out, although this appears more of a precaution so that he gets 100% fit for the Beijing Olympics.

The 1-1 draw earlier in the evening saw the pace of the game quicker than in the previous Tests.

GB opened the scoring six minutes from half-time, with Matt Daly scoring a fine goal. SA equalised against the run of play with a quarter-hour left, through Lungile Tsolekile.

Geoff Abbott, Shanyl Balwanth, Ken Forbes, Gareth Carr (all KZN Raiders); Bruce Jacobs (capt), Paul Blake, Eric Rose-Innes, Austin Smith, Marvin Bam, Andrew Cronje (all WP); Tommy Hammond (KZN Midlands), Julian Hykes (Border), Thornton McDade, Rassie Pieterse (both Southern Gauteng), Emile Smith, Lungile Tsolekile (both Northern Gauteng), Chris Hibbert, Clyde Abrahams (both Eastern Province).
