Happy Again

A PIETERMARITZBURG couple had their wildest dream come true when they tied the knot at a fairytale wedding on M-Net’s new reality show, I Wanna Be ….

Ramona and Kenneth Chetty of Northdale entered the competition where winners are helped to make their dreams come true with an SMS saying “I wanna be … happy again”

Their special day, which took place on July 17, will be broadcast on M-Net at 6 pm tomorrow.

The two became childhood friends when Ramona moved to Northdale in 1994. They spent most of the time playing board games.

In 1999, Ramona got married and moved to Durban. Kenneth also married and the two friends lost contact. However, fate intervened and a chance encounter — Ramona was looking for a lift club to Durban — led her to Kenneth.

“In 2007, I was looking for a lift to Durban. My sister spoke to Kenneth first and then passed my number to him, we ended up chatting for an hour about our lives,” she said.

The couple soon met for coffee and cake at Quincy’s at Victoria Mall and chatted about their lives and the memories from their childhood. Kenneth also helped Ramona deal with her divorce.

“He was such a good friend throughout everything. He was my pillar of strength during that time. That’s when we decided to take our relationship further,” she said.

They planned to have a wedding, but had to be put it on hold when their daughter, Kendra, was born.

Kenneth has two children, Mickayla and Narado, from his previous marriage, while Ramona has a son, Nikhir, from her marriage

“When I saw the show, I knew I had to enter. I have always been daring. When I found that we had won, I was speechless,” she said.

The couple’s dream wedding was held at the Royal Swazi Spa in Swaziland and was attended by 40 of their closest friends and family. Ramona had a dress designed for her, while the wedding rings were sponsored.

“It was not a dream. We had a fairy-tale wedding. Everything from the dress to the décor was beautiful. We were really spoilt and M-Net has given us so many memories,” she said.

Kenneth said the competition was a life-changing experience for the family; he also said that God and prayer had played a huge part in their relationship.

“I didn’t think that we stood a chance of winning. We entered and prayed about it. Even though we could have had a civil wedding, I wanted Ramona to have a white one,” he said.

Their marriage has inspired other divorcees to seek love and happiness, he said. “So many people, some total strangers, have called to say that they were inspired by our love. There is life after divorce.”

The couple’s advice for others? Compromise, love and forgive.
