Harding: New shopping centre breaks ground

2011-12-02 00:00

HARDING’S first shopping centre, Harding Corner, will break ground on January 13 next year.

Major retail tenants, such as Shoprite Liquors, Price&Pride, Ellerines, OK Furniture, MTN and Spec Savers have confirmed their retail space.

Harding Pharmacy has also confirmed that it will be moving to the new centre once it is complete. Various other national franchises, including well known fast food chains, are currently in lease negotiations.

The R80-million development is a project of Amber Dawn Developments and the shopping centre is expected to open in late 2012.

Although letting space will predominantly be taken up by larger franchise stores, developers have also included a separate node of 34 small retail stores to provide a structured trading area for local businesses.

Ed Peen, chair of Amber Dawn, who also heads of nine other business in KZN, said the smaller retail spaces are very necessary for this small rural town.

“It will eliminate the need for traders to operate from the streets,” said Peen, who has been in the property game for more than 40 years.

Ultimately, this will improve the aesthetics of Harding Corner as a whole, he added.

Peen said the retail node has not yet been seen in rural shopping centre design in South Africa, and will add to the shopping experience offered at Harding.

“The area will be attractively designed and monitored with CCTV (cameras) to ensure the safety of both shoppers and tenants”, said Peen.
