Harry Gwala ANC speaker sacked

2015-03-23 00:00

THE Speaker for the Harry Gwala District Municipality which has its seat in Ixopo, Mandla Ncgobo, has been suspended from the ANC for a year, and fired from his post.

Ngcobo last year wrote a letter to the ANC provincial executive committee alleging widespread corruption by his colleagues, and further blew the whistle on party members, alleging they went on a property-buying spree using council money.

The letter was leaked to the Mail & Guardian.

He was subsequently charged by the ANC’s regional executive committee for bringing the party into disrepute and sowing division within the party.

Ngcobo also approached the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in October last year to stop the municipality from making an allegedly irregular payment to a company which he claimed had been overpaid by R14 million.

“By virtue of his suspension … Ngcobo will no longer be a Speaker. We have found him guilty [of misconduct],” said ANC spokesperson Zolani Mhlongo.

Mhlongo said the disciplinary committee found Ngcobo guilty of not respecting the ANC’s internal processes in line with the National General Council of 2010, which states that before taking the organisation to court he had to exhaust all internal processes.

“We decided to release him as the Speaker of the municipality. At the next council sitting in two weeks we are going to select a new Speaker,” said Mhlongo.

Ngcobo could not be reached for comment as his cellphone was on voicemail yesterday.
