Harry Gwala: Closed for upgrade

2008-05-28 00:00

The city’s Harry Gwala Stadium will be closing for a year, so that the current grandstand can be demolished and work begin on upgrading the grounds.

Steven Naick, Msunduzi Municipality’s manager for parks, sports and recreation, said the tender for demolishing the grandstand is currently being adjudicated and they expect work to begin within two weeks of the tender being awarded.

Work on Harry Gwala is expected to be completed by November next year. The provincial government has set aside R50 million for the project and part of the upgrade will include a new grandstand according to Fifa standards. There will be proper change rooms, broadcasting facilities and entertainment areas.

Maritzburg United, who use Harry Gwala, will be offered the use of Wadley Stadium, which has been upgraded to PSL standards with an artificial pitch.
