The Umgungundlovu District Municipality is adamant that the reconstruction of the Harry Gwala Stadium will be completed ahead of the start of the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup next year June.

Dismissing rumours about the reconstruction being behind schedule, district municipal manager Sibusiso Khuzwayo said on Friday that construction is ahead of schedule by four weeks.

Khuzwayo said the work on the stadium is being carried out by Erbacon Construction, the company that revamped the New England Interchange.

“We are ahead of schedule and I can put my head on a block about that. The stadium is scheduled for completion in October,” said Khuzwayo.

He said Erbacon updates the municipality on progress on a weekly basis. He added that the cost of the stadium stands at R86 million, but the cost will rise to R119 million once the entire stadium is completed.

Khuzwayo said the shortfall would be footed collectively by the Msunduzi Municipality, the district and theLocal Government and Traditional Affairs Department.
