Harry Gwala will still host matches, but club boss can’t say how many

2012-05-05 00:00

MARITZBURG United chairperson Farouk Kadodia has assured the club’s fans there will be PSL football at Harry Gwala stadium next season, though he is not sure exactly how much football there will be in the city.

The club played three league matches in Port Elizabeth this season and Kadodia confirmed to Weekend Witness yesterday that there had been an offer from the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium to play more fixtures there next season.

“The club’s board will meet next week,” Kadodia said.

“We will look at our budgets and see what is in the best interests of the club.”

The chairperson added that the absence of a title sponsor made the decision even more difficult, with the club benefiting financially from trips to Port Elizabeth.

“We are trying to secure a sponsor and we are hoping to have clarity on that in the next 10 days or so,” said Kadodia. “A sponsor would be ideal as it will alleviate the financial stress.”

While it is not known exactly how many home games will be taken to Port Elizabeth next season, it appears that it will be more than the three that were lost to the 2010 World Cup venue this season.

“At the moment there is no chance that we will move all of our games to Port Elizabeth,” said Kadodia. “We will still be playing PSL games in Maritzburg next season. I just can’t tell you how many.

“Our first venue is Harry Gwala and our second venue is PE; that will not change.”
