Haswell off sick after hospital stay

THE absence from work of Msunduzi Municipal manager Rob Haswell since last week Wednesday has had tongues wagging.

Speculation at the municipality is that he was dodging the announcement on Monday about the embattled council’s financial state.

However, Haswell is on sick leave and a letter from his doctor was submitted to the mayor’s office last week alluding to this.

A manager in his office, Madeleine Jackson-Plaatjies, said that Haswell was admitted to hospital last week Wednesday with chest pains and has been booked off sick until February 28.

The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, said on Monday that Msunduzi Municipality only has sufficient cash to fund about one week of operations.

Municipal workers, who did not want to be named, told The Witness that Haswell has in the past vehemently denied that there is a cash crisis in the council.

They claimed that it is not the first time Haswell had been absent from work when the council faces challenges.

However, his office said that he was booked off sick before the announcement was made and that he is “genuinely” sick.
