Hat-trick nets College’s Glutz a school record of 51 goals

GRANT Glutz has done it. He has broken the Maritzburg College record of goals scored in a season by putting 51 goals into the net.

The previous record was 48 but Glutz scored all three goals in College’s 3-2 win against Glenwood.

The match against Glenwood was played in conditions more akin to the highveld on a cold day. College led 2-0 at the break after dominating most of the play.

They then went into their shells trying to protect their lead, which was going to give them an unbeaten season. Glenwood sensed the change and came back well to score two goals with 10 minutes remaining.

In the last seconds (in fact the hooter had blown) College were awarded a penalty corner. Glenwood would have known that Glutz would have a shot at goal, but they could not stop him.

It was unlikely that his powerful drag-flick into the top right-hand corner of the goal would have been prevented by even a top-class keeper.

This gave College a 3-2 win.

When Glutz was congratulated, he modestly said that it would not have happened without the whole team contributing.

This has given College an unbeaten season with 21 wins, and one draw against Grey College.
