Have petsitters, will travel

LOOKING after pets while their owners are away is what Jess Cherry (26) does for a living.

Her business Petsitters started while she was studying at university and looking for ways to earn money.

She had decided never to waitress again as she had done that during high school and had loathed it.

Her mom suggested that she try looking after other people’s pets at their owner’s homes and it seemed like a great idea. Now eight years later she has a reputable business in Pietermaritzburg, and she is inundated with requests, especially during holiday seasons or long weekends.

“My boyfriend started his own graphics design business and he designed a great poster with tear off numbers and after a week I got my first job. After that the business slowly grew.

“I have a website and I also try and educate people on pets and animal care, but I rely mainly on word of mouth,” said Cherry.

“I think one has to love animals and be prepared to spend a little time with them.

“A pat and a cuddle can make a lot of difference to them when their ‘parents’ are away.”

In busy times Cherry hires extra people to help her keep her army of clients happy and they are all trained to deal with animals.

“I studied business administration, so I am lucky that many of the subjects were very helpful to me in setting up my own business,” said Cherry.
