Have you seen your own golf swing?

CHATTING at the 19th hole a few weeks ago, the subject of golf swings arose. Two of the members said that they had no idea what their own swings looked like. They never had the inclination to ask someone to take a video of their swings. Can you believe that? Both golfers had been playing the game for years and years, and these days even though the most basic little digital camera has a short movie facility, they hadn’t bothered to take a shot of their swings.

Moreover, cellphones now can take a limited-time movie too. Surely every golfer should see his or her swing, especially those who have been told that their swings are different?

It has been said that no two golf swings are the same. That’s a broad statement particularly when it comes to professionals, but the experts say that two swings that look the same, in fact aren’t.

The swings among ordinary weekend golfers are extremely varied, that’s understandable because golfers come in all shapes and sizes and all ages. Every golf club has a few members whose swings are, to be euphemistic, unusual. The members know who the funny swingers are and unfortunately they are often teased both on and off the course. However, we have to accept that the funny swingers somehow adapt to their encumbrance, they have handicaps, they enjoy the game as much as anyone else, they manage to whack the ball around the course in remarkably low scores and you will find them in the winning enclosure collecting prizes. You can’t argue with that.

When the Matchplay championships arrive and you are drawn to play against a funny swinger, you are under so much additional pressure because it would be your worst nightmare to lose to someone whose swing defies the fundamental logic of hitting a golf ball.

There was a story of a golfer who arranged for a movie clip of his swing and got such a surprise at what he saw, he gave up the game and took up 10-pin bowling. He was sadly lost to the wonderful game.

But in spite of that, surely it’s reasonable to think that every golfer should see his or her own swing, mainly for the sake of curiosity if not for possible self-improvement? But if you happen to be one of those funny swingers and you haven’t yet seen your swing, a word of advice: don’t bother just in case the shock is too much for you.

From the 19th hole

Three old golfers, Sam, Harry and Fred were sitting together after their weekly game of golf. These are some of the things they were overheard saying to each other.

Sam said: “There must be something very strange in a man who, if left alone in a room with a tea cosy, doesn’t try it on.”

Harry said: “I bought a self-help CD called How to Handle Disappointment. I got it home and the box was empty.”

Fred said: “Someone stole all my credit cards, but I won’t be reporting it. The thief spends less than my wife did.”
