Hawks Members: ‘Three Musketeers’ granted bail of R20?000 each

2011-10-12 00:00

DUBBED the “Three Musketeers” — two Hawks members Pat Pillay and Jason Reddy charged with corruption and private investigator Ian Ault, accused of impersonating a police officer — were released on bail by the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Pillay and Reddy, members of the Hawks’ commercial fraud unit, were nabbed following a sting operation by their own unit when they tried to extort R50 000 from an allegedly corrupt businessman.

The businessman blew the whistle on the three, informing their colleagues.

Sources said that their modus operandi was to take on investigations where the state had a weak case and extort the subjects.

More arrests are said to be imminent and there are other instances of alleged corruption being investigated against the three.

The accused have been charged under Section 1 of the Corruption Act and with defeating the ends of justice.

Bail was granted at R20 000 each as it was found the applicants are not a flight risk.

The matter has been adjourned till January 25.
