Hawks: Polela suspended

2012-11-08 00:00

COLONEL McIntosh Polela, spokesperson for the Hawks, was suspended this week after he joked in tweets about jail rape.

Polela, formerly an e.tv-journalist, reacted with shock when sister paper Beeld asked him about his suspension yesterday and refused to comment.

On Twitter he said he was on study leave in France and working on his doctorate. He has not acted as spokesperson for the Hawks in weeks.

The tweet that landed him in hot water was sent last month, after the kwaito singer Jub Jub Maarohanye was found guilty of several charges, including four of murder.

Polela had refused to revoke a “personal tweet for friends” in which he saidhe hoped the fans of Maarohanye would give him a pot of Vaseline for prison.

Brigadier Phuti Setati, national police spokesperson, said Polela had been suspended in terms of the police’s communication regulations.

He said the police could not make more information available as it was an internal issue.
