Hawks silent on probe into Malema’s alleged tender fraud

2011-11-11 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The Hawks’ investigation into Julius Malema, suspended leader of the ANC Youth League, continues unabated, but there is no feedback on how far the process has gone.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel McIntosh Polela said yesterday the media will be informed when the investigation has been concluded. He declined to confirm a report earlier this month that the Hawks have proof of tender fraud.

The Hawks began investigations into Malema and his business affairs in August, focusing on Malema’s family trust. The trust is allegedly a channel for bribes in exchange for Malema’s influence over provincial tenders.

City Press reported on Sunday that David Mabilu, a Limpopo property mogul who hosted Malema at his Mauritius wedding, had on more than one occasion paid of over R100 000 cash into the trust account. Malema responded that the trust only received donations from businesses helping him in welfare projects.
