Hawks spokesperson Polela shown the door

2013-05-16 00:00

MCINTOSH Polela, the Hawks spokesperson, has been kicked out of the SA Police Service over comments he made on Twitter.

He may appeal the decision.

Polela was fired on March 27, but this only emerged in a response by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to a parliamentary question yesterday.

He had been suspended on full pay since November, earning R323 238,41.

Earlier this year, Mthethwa said that 9 835 officers suspended on full pay between April 1, 2012. and February 28, 2013, had cost the department R8,4 million.

Polela’s sin was a tweet referring to prison rape after kwaito star Jub Jub was jailed.

He declined to apologise immediately. He finally apologised months later.

More recently, Polela was accused of hunting in a game reserve near Himeville and of pointing a firearm at farmers investigating the incident.

In his turn, Polela laid charges of assault and the pointing of a firearm against some of the farmers.

He said he was hunting on ancestral land.

KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the dossier had been referred to the NPA for a decision on whether to prosecute.

Polela declined to say whether he would appeal his dismissal.

“It is an internal process about which I cannot comment.”

He denied there was any charge pending against him.
