He loves fast cars, firearms

OSCAR Pistorius loved firearms and fast cars.

That much was clear from profiles in the New York Times and the British Daily Mail, by writers who spent days in his company.

Under the headline “The Fast Life of Oscar Pistorius”, Michael Sokolove of the New York Times described Pistorius’s love of guns and how the runner took him to a shooting range.

“Pistorius was a good coach. A couple of my shots got close to the bull’s-eye, which delighted him. … ‘If you practised, I think you could be pretty deadly’.”

Jonathan McEvoy of the Daily Mail, under the headline “Inside Oscar’s bedroom: One cricket bat, baseball bat, revolver and machine gun”, said he had a pistol and an automatic weapon next to his bed.

Late last year he tweeted: “Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking it’s an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry! Waa”.

Sokolove and McEvoy both described Pistorius as a man who had endured tough times as a child. His parents, Henke and Sheila, divorced when he was six, and his mother died when he was 15.

Pistorius also loved speed, owning high-powered motorcycles until an accident left one of his prosthetic legs torn off.

He was recently reported to have bought a R1,3 million McLaren Spider sportscar.

“Pistorius is … blessed with an uncommon temperament — a fierce, even frenzied need to take on the world at maximum speed and with minimum caution,” Sokolove wrote.
