Head of Divine Life Society on farewell visit to Maritzburg

2010-10-21 00:00

THE head of an international spiritual organisation well known for its community service is currently visiting the city.

Sri Swami Vimlananda (78), world president of the Divine Life Society, is on a farewell tour to the country. In view of his age, he said, this would be his last visit to say goodbye to friends and devotees of the Society in Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Johannesburg. “There is not end to travel, but there is an end to life,” he said. For 60 years, Vimlananda has lived at the Society’s headquarters on its ashram in Rishikesh, India, in the foothills of the Himalayas. He was elected world president in 2008.

The society has built schools, skills development centres, hospitals and clinics in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

The Divine Life Society was founded in 1936 by Swami Sivananda. Its teachings include vegetarianism, belief in karma and reincarnation and the need for service to society. It has branches all over the world, including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
