Head-on crash kills eight

2008-02-27 00:00

Eight people were killed near Umzinto yesterday, when a bus collided head-on with a minibus travelling in the opposite direction. The minibus driver was killed, but the bus driver was not injured and was arrested for negligent driving and faces eight counts of culpable homicide.

It is alleged that the driver of the bus was trying to overtake a car and did not see the minibus.

Five emergency vehicles attended to the accident in which three people were also seriously injured. The jaws of life had to be used to rescue those who were trapped. They were airlifted to King Edward and G.J. Crookes hospitals.

In Pietermaritzburg, a minibus carrying 10 children on their way to school collided with a traffic vehicle and then hit a tree yesterday morning.

The traffic vehicle, coming from Retief Street, had its siren on as it entered the Langalibalele intersection. Two minibuses were allegedly coming down the street at high speed. The first minibus driver managed to avoid the traffic vehicle, but the second nicked it, lost control of his minibus and then hit a tree 50 metres away.

In total, 13 people were injured, including the driver of the minibus, who was thrown through the windscreen. Netcare 911 took the victims to Northdale Hospital. All the victims were discharged later yesterday.

The traffic officer was not hurt in the accident.
