Health managers suspended

2009-09-09 00:00

THREE managers in the Health Department have been suspended on full pay, amid investigations into the finances of the department, Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said yesterday.

Speaking during the KZN government’s finance portfolio committee sitting, Dhlomo said that the managers are on precautionary suspension.

The MEC declined to reveal the names of the managers to the media or say which section of the department they are employed in.

Committee chair Belinda Scott also called on Dhlomo to investigate the department’s former chief financial officer (CFO) and head of human resources, saying there were glaring financial and human resource irregularities when these senior managers were in the employ of the department.

Scott said the former CFO’s reports to the portfolio committee were dishonest and failed to give the committee a full picture of the department’s financial position.

The ANC’s Sipho Gcabashe urged the MEC to ensure that the investigations are concluded timeously as investigations tend to drag while the suspended officials sit at home on full pay. Dhlomo said it is envisaged to be completed in under three months.
