Hearing voices

WE look set for another week with not much happening at the movies in Pietermaritzburg. There is nothing new at the Liberty Midlands Mall, while Ster Kinekor has Stranger than Fiction and The Marine starting. Guru is the new Bollywood film at Nu Metro.

Stranger Than Fiction is directed by Marc Forster and stars Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah. Ferrell plays an IRS investigator who suddenly finds himself the subject of a narration only he can hear. It transpires that he is the subject of a novel by a reclusive author (Thompson) and she is controlling his life. Some overseas reviews thought it was sentimental and silly, others went for witty and intelligent. Local ones inclined more to the first view. Take your pick.

John Bonito directs The Marine, an action film starring WWE wrestler John Cena, making the move from one kind of scripted entertainment to another. He plays a marine who has been discharged from the forces after an incident in Iraq where he disobeyed orders to save some hostages from Al Quaeda. A group of diamond thieves on the run then kidnap his wife in the South Carolinian wilderness. No argument about the reviews here Ñ they are bad.

Guru has only just been released and is directed by Mani Ratnam and stars Abhishek Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty and Aishwarya Rai. A villager, Gurukant Desai (Bachchan), arrives in Bombay in 1958 and rises from its streets to become the Guru, the biggest tycoon in India. Reviews for this one suggest it is better than the average poor-guy-makes-good story.
