Hearings: new justice system in SA

2008-11-19 00:00

CAPE TOWN —The parliamentary committees for Justice, Safety and Security and Correctional Services of the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces will hold public hearings in the provinces from next week on a proposed overhaul of the criminal justice system.

Justice committee chairman Yunus Carrim said yesterday the hearings will be held from November 24 to December 5. In KZN, they will be held in the Imbizo Hall in Richards Bay on November 26 and in the Ezingolweni Municipal Hall on the south coast on November 27.

Carrim said it is crucial that the public has a say, especially as the state cannot on its own significantly reduce crime and ensure justice. “Public participation is vital, including through the proposed strengthened community policing forums and new community safety forums.”

He said the hearings will focus on the victims’ charter, domestic violence legislation and improved communication between law enforcement officials and local communities.

The overhaul aims to revive an ailing crime-fighting strategy and strengthen all the structures involved, from the highest courts to community policing forums.
