Heart pounding action

THE final day’s play in the fourth annual Skonk Nicholson Festival took place yesterday under cloudy skies. The matches on Godstones were largely keenly contested. Some fixtures in the under-15 and 14 were rearranged due to the withdrawal of the Midlands Development teams.

After the three days, two sides remained unbeaten in the under-16 age group, Maritzburg College and Kearsney. College beat Kempton Park — previously unbeaten — in the final game, but just by one point. Kearsney also had a tight game beating Pretoria Boys by two points.

At under-15 level three sides went through unbeaten, Maritzburg College, KES and Westville. There were also three unbeaten teams in the under-14 group, Grey College, Michaelhouse and EG Jansen.

It was a fitting finale to the festival in front of a good crowd who saw some fine rugby when College — who trailed 5-7 at the break — scored a converted try and a penalty to win 15-14 against a competitive Kempton Park team.

Pretoria BHS were very disappointed to lose their last two matches 5-7 after leading 5-0 for almost the entire game. This happened against Westville on Monday and again yesterday against Kearsney. Kearsney scored a try in the last minute and converted to score the seven points to give them the win.

Another very close match in the under-16 was the 10 all draw between Hilton and Menlopark. In the first match on Goldstones Hudson Park edged out Trinityhouse 7-5.

Grey College and Michaelhouse both won their three matches easily. Grey notched up 155 points with just three against, with scores of 60-0 against Westville, 53-3 against Middelburg and 42-0 against Maritzburg College. Grey put a lot of effort into their under-14 side having three coaches and a manger associated with the team.

Michaelhouse scored 142 points also with only 3 points against, winning 57-0 against Benoni, 61-3 against Trinityhouse and 24-0 against Jeppe. EG Jansen under-14 won all three games but it was not as easy for them. Yesterday they played the previously unbeaten Nelspruit side and won 18-5.

The only negative of the festival was the unfortunate withdrawal of the Development sides. This was done on the instruction from the KZN Transformation Committee, who have an unsolved spat with the Sharks management. The boys in these two teams are the ones that have been directly affected. This also includes kit that would have been given to them yesterday. It is unlikely that the Development teams will be invited in the future, as their withdrawal caused headaches for the organisers.
