Heat, not crocodiles, this year’s biggest Dusi danger

2011-02-16 00:00

IT’S all systems go for the Unlimited Dusi Marathon tomorrow, and the organisers said they have put everything in place.

Spokesperson Ray de Vries said they have hired a helicopter to spray the hyacinth along the race route while employees from the Department of Water Affairs assisted in removing it manually.

Umgeni Water will be releasing water from Henley and Inanda Dams today. “We’re happy with the state of affairs at this stage. The water levels are great and the number of paddlers has increased by 20% compared to the last K1 [single canoe race]. Currently we have 1 731 registered compared to 1 450 in the last race,” said De Vries.

He warned though that tomorrow will be extremely hot. Malaysian company 100PLUS will be providing hydration products along the race route. De Vries said the company has hired a helicopter for a quick response to reported cases of dehydration and refreshments will be made available at strategic points. Spectators will see Comrades Marathon legend Bruce Fordice partnering up with Cape Town businessman Marcel Joubert and Binnelanders actor Paul Du Toit. Every finisher will receive a Graham Pope Ellis medal to commemorate Ellis who died in a tractor accident.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Maureen Zimu said they have set traps for crocodiles but have not made any catches. She said they were not anticipating any attacks as the shy reptiles will lie low during the race.
