Heavy rain: ‘chaotic’ scenes after trucks and cars collide on n3

2011-07-26 00:00

THE persistent rain that fell over Pietermaritzburg yesterday evening contributed to two separate accidents on the N3 that occurred minutes apart, leaving five people injured.

ER24’s Derrick Banks told The Witness that two trucks and three cars were involved in two separate collisions on the N3 at the Peter Brown and Chatterton off-ramps.

Banks said five people were injured, one critically.

The critically injured person is believed to be the driver of one of the trucks. He sustained serious injuries to his legs.

“Advanced life support intervention had to be performed. The patient had to be intubated and placed on a ventilator while being treated,” said Banks.

The other injured were in small cars and sustained long and short bone fractures. They were taken to hospitals in Pietermaritzburg.

As a result of the heavy rain the accident scenes were described as “chaotic”.
