Heavy rains caused havoc in Durban with over 20 collisions reported

IT has been a busy five days for the emergency services teams as the inclement weather has resulted in over 20 collisions in Durban and surrounding areas. Numerous patients have been sent to various hospitals to receive treatment for their injuries.

On Monday, Rescue Care paramedics attended to a serious collision at the intersection of Commercial Road and Aliwal Street.

They found that two vehicles had collided in the junction before one of them rolled numerous times. Both drivers had sustained moderate injuries and were stabilised on the scene.

Just before 5 pm, paramedics responded to Stapleton Road in Pinetown for a collision where a man was seriously injured.

On Bulwer Road, just before McDonald Road on Monday night, paramedics found that a vehicle had hit with a tree. One passenger sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised on the scene before being transported to hospital.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said a taxi accident occured yesterday on South Coast Road just before Grimsby Road, with the six passengers all sustaining various injuries yesterday.

“Paramedics treated and transported one patient after his vehicle overturned on the M13 Durban-bound near Westwood Mall this morning,” he said.

All incidents were being investigated by the police.

The municipality’s emergency control and disaster management unit has also been assisting those affected by the heavy rains.

Spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said disaster teams were still at various sites assessing the situation and determining the type of relief required.

“Clean-up operations have begun at various areas to remove the debris from the streets,” he said.
