Help needed on families of HMS Neptune's dead

DO you know anyone who perished in the HMS Neptune?

A researcher is trying to trace local relatives and descendants of the South African men who were lost at sea during World War 2.

Denise Austin said that HMS Neptune, a cruiser of the Royal Navy, sank on 19 December 1941 when it hit an uncharted minefield in the Mediterranean off Tripoli. Only one man survived, with 764 men lost.

“The South African men were from two different sources. There were two from Pietermaritzburg and two from Durban.”

From Pietermaritzburg, were:

• Thomas Albert Adams (25), son of Albert and Ethel Adams and husband of A.M. Adams. They had a son.

• Frank Gavin Gill (21) son of Christian John and Adelaide Margaret Gill.

From Durban, were:

• Roy Martin Campbell (23), son of Roy and Olive Campbell.

• Rodney Morris (age unknown), son of Mr and Mrs J.K. Morris.
