Helping hands reach out to brutalised EC toddler

THERE may be light at the end of the tunnel for a helpless Matatiele family who are seeking medical treatment and justice for their 17-month-old daughter.

Last week The Witness published an article about the horrific attack on the child.

A relative allegedly sold the little girl to her boyfriend for muthi for R300 when she was nine months old.

The man sliced parts from her face, chopped off two fingers from her left hand and set the child alight while she was bundled in a blanket.

She survived the attack — horrifically scarred — and the perpetrators have gone unpunished.

Readers moved by the child’s trauma have offered to help.

Amy Byloo of Pietermaritzburg said: “I was shocked when I read this horrific story … She was so little and she still survived. That is a miracle.”

Byloo immediately started contacting surgeons and charities.

“There are hospitals and doctors in KwaZulu-Natal who are capable of treating her very well and I’m going to continue trying until I get her help,” she said.

“It is going to be hard for [the family] to travel back and forth to the Eastern Cape. If it is necessary I will keep her in my home if she needs accommodation between treatments or find her a suitable home.”

An anonymous reader in Durban and some friends are collecting food parcels, blankets, clothes and cash to courier to the family.

Said local ANC councillor Thembeka Dyantyi: “The response from the community [where the family live] has been overwhelming. It is a poor community, but they have opened their hearts.”
