High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa - it's down to the top 10

2008-08-28 00:00

In this Saturday’s episode of M-Net’s High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa the competition is down to the all-important Top 10 phase. There are only 5 guys and 5 girls left with a shot at winning the lead roles of Troy and Gabriella in the stage musical High School Musical: Live On Stage.

From this week voting lines will open right at the start of the show, to allow fans to begin voting as soon as their favourite contestant has sung. The voting lines will stay open until the start of the Results Show on Monday at 7pm and the dramatic results will be announced live on air. The four contestants with the fewest votes will be in danger, and producer Pieter Toerien will be able to save two of them – one guy and one girl. The other two will have to say goodbye.

Fans can vote for free on the official High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa website at www.mnet.co.za. Viewers can also vote via SMS by texting their favourite performer’s name to 34685 (SMS’s cost R2 and free minutes do not apply) or simply by dialling each performer’s individual voting line. (Calls are charged at VAS rates, free minutes do not apply.)

Techno-savvy fans can also vote on the Mxit application on their cellphones. All they have to do is to download Mobigo as a Contact by going to MXIT Mix in Tradepost. They can vote up to 10 times for free.

This week’s theme is “Bop To The Dance” and the Top 10 get to show off their dancing skills.  It’s a theatrical, glamorous show with a spectacular opening number for which Musical Director Charl-Johan Lingenfelder has arranged the HSM song “We’re All In This Together” to a sophisticated “On Broadway” theme.

Series director Eugene Naidoo promises that viewers will get to know each contestant a little more personally, as each one of them gets a chance to sing and dance their own special little routine.

Carmen is singing the old Peggy Lee standard “Fever” while Dineo gets a little raunchy with the Tina Turner classic “Proud Mary”. Lorri goes old-school with “Dancing Cheek To Cheek”, from the Fred Astaire musical Top Hat, and Danni will sing the sexy “Stuff Like That There”, made famous by Bette Midler in the movie For The Boys.

Tsephi brings the funk with the Blood, Sweat and Tears classic “Spinning Wheel”, and David gets romantic with “I Could Have Danced All Night”, from the musical My Fair Lady. Daniel will do the old Gene Kelly soft-shoe-shuffle to “Singing In The Rain” (most apt for Cape Town this week!) while Darren goes back to the 30’s with the Judy Garland standard “Get Happy”.

Mario will be singing the glamorous Cole Porter classic “I Get A Kick Out Of You”, which was one of Frank Sinatra’s biggest hits, and Lyle also pays respects to Ol’ Blue Eyes with “Strangers In The Night”.

Catch High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa on M-Net every Saturday and Monday at 7pm. The performers voted off every week will be interviewed live on Go Exxtra: HSM on Go every Monday at 7.30pm.
