High praise for city firefighters

2014-09-02 00:00

FIREFIGHTERS and those involved in relief work in the aftermath of the fire at the Jika Joe informal settlement came in for high praise during the Executive Committee (Exco) meeting yesterday.

Mayor Chris Ndlela said he was impressed with the speed at which the firefighters doused the fire in trying circumstances. He also thanked councillors and the Community Services Business Unit who worked over the weekend to provide relief to those affected by the fire. His praises were endorsed by all members of Exco.

The discussion came up when a draft disaster management plan came before Exco for approval.

Deputy municipal manager Boniwe Zulu said they had provided food parcels, blankets, foam mattresses and tents.

Zulu said it was possible that some of those affected could be moved into transit houses when these were ready for occupation.

Councillor Bill Lambert said the city could take comfort that there was a disaster management plan in place.
