High-riding Western Province thump KZN Coastal twice

2011-03-23 00:00

IT was a tough four days for KZN Coastal as they went down twice to high-riding Western Province at Kingsmead in Durban.

Sunday’s Provincial Challenge 40-over encounter saw a runaway victory by the Cape lads and they made sure of winning the 2010/11 title with a rollicking 149-run victory over a Coastal side who have been in winning form of late.

The Provincial Three-day Challenge match that preceded the 40-over bash was a closer affair but it also went the way of Western Province, this time a two-wicket victory. The win gave West Province a useful lead over second-placed Gauteng on the log and with just one round to go for both teams, the Cape Town lads could well bring off a marvellous Provincial Challenge double.

Set a target of 284 to win, in the three-dayer, Western Province batted beautifully to reach the target in just 60 overs.

Their batters continued the carnage on Sunday with a mammoth 317 for six in their 40 overs and in reply KZN Coastal were bowled out for 168 in just 26 overs, as the required eight-per over run rate ensured wickets fell regularly.

Meanwhile, the KZN Inland team who are travelling to Potchefstroom to play against North West from tomorrow will be without captain Kyle Nipper, who is nursing an injury. Last season’s skipper, Tim Drummond, takes over the reins.

The KZN Coastal side to meet Free State in Bloemfontein will be captained once again by Khaya Zondo.
