High school girls set record entry

The 2008 Mondi Rotatrim Epworth Inter-school Adventure Challenge for high school girls took place under perfect blue skies on the picturesque Mount Shannon Estate in Boston earlier this month.

This 100-kilometre adventure saw a record entry of over 80 competitors representing 34 teams enjoying the great outdoors at its best. This three-day event witnessed the return of several teams from previous years who were keen to take on the multidiscipline challenges incorporated in the race. These included mountain-biking through the picturesque Mondi forests, paddling rubber ducks across dams, hiking up a gorge through exquisite indigenous forest, climbing a waterfall and feeding their need for speed on the 100-metre foofie-slide over a dam.

The top Epworth team took an early lead, but soon experienced irreperable bike problems. The most intense competition then developed between eventual winners St John’s DSG, St Anne’s and Kloof high schools.

This year, the competition was fierce with the category winners only being decided on the last day of racing. — Own Correspondent.
