Hijack gang guns down Verulam man

2013-05-11 00:00

A MAN from Verulam, north of Durban, was shot dead by three armed robbers on Thursday night.

Hiassan Lall (50) was shot in his upper body outside his Trenance Park home by three armed men after they tried to steal his 1400 Nissan bakkie.

The head of Reaction Unit South Africa, Prem Balram, said that when Lall and his son Arif noticed that three men were trying to steal their bakkie, they confronted them with a Norinco 9mm pistol.

The alleged car thieves returned fire, shooting Lall in the chest. They disarmed the son and fled on foot.

Lall was pronounced dead a few minutes later.

Balram said he had received several frantic calls from residents in Tangerine Street, Trenance Park, of a shooting and possible armed robbery in progress. He dispatched several response vehicles to the area where they found Lall lying on the ground outside his home.

He said Arif returned fire at the suspects.

He said members of the reaction unit, the SA Police Service in Verulam and the dog unit followed a trail leading to Zwelisha, a nearby informal settlement.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed the incident. He said a case of murder and house robbery was opened at Verulam SAPS for investigation and no arrests had been made.

Attempts to contact the family were unsuccessful.

Police urged people with information to call Verulam police station at 032 541 5200 or Reaction Unit South Africa at 086 1234 333.
