Hijackers hurl rocks off N2 bridge, killing woman

2007-12-31 00:00

THE Traffic Department has warned motorists to be careful when travelling along the N2 freeway near Umvoti on the north coast after a woman was killed on Saturday morning when rocks were thrown over the bridge by people who probably intended to hijack the car.

The rock is believed to have landed on the car’s windscreen, resulting in the driver being injured and the woman, who was the passenger, being instantly killed.

Traffic spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said that this incident was not the first time that rocks have been used as a decoy by hijackers.

“It was happening at a bridge in Port Shepstone until we warned motorists … ,” she said.

Mngomezulu said that she will advise all motorists to be on the lookout every time when travelling under the bridges on the N2 and if they see people standing on the bridges they must notify the police.

“Motorists travelling at night must put on their bright lights when nearing the [Umvoti] bridge so that they can see what is happening on the bridge to ensure their safety.”
