Hill and Schuit shine in MTB race

THE Safire MTB Classic took place last weekend in the beautiful Baynesfield Estate with a field of over 500 mountain bikes over both the 45 km Classic and 25 km Intermediate races. Andrew Hill won convincingly in the Classic in 1:50:37, followed by Stellenbosch student Willie Brink (1:56:31) with Andrew Warr taking third (1:57:05).

In-form young Savannah Schuit won the women’s race in 2:20:44 — nearly two minutes ahead of Sarah Gray (2:22:30) with Sue Chapman third (2:32:54). Alan Hatherly was the first Youth rider home in fourth place overall, while Warren Price claimed the Sub-Veteran title in fifth place overall. Paul Lancaster led the Masters home and Gavin Dundas-Starr claimed the Veteran title.

The 25 km Race was won by Joshua Nelson in 55:20. Second place went to Robert Berry and Norman Hatherly in third. Yvonne du Pont was the first woman home. Full results available on www.elitetiming.co.za



The John Dory’s Golovane MTB Classic takes place tomorrow morning from Holla Trails near Ballito.

Riders may register today at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre between 2 and 5 pm or tomorrow at Holla Trails between 6 and 8.30 am. The six kilometre Kiddies Ride goes off first at 8 am, followed by the 50 km Classic at 9 am and the 20 km race at 9.45 am. Further details on www.golovane.co.za. Next Saturday (July 16) has a new event on the calendar; the FOX “King of the Dirt” MTB race, which takes place from Sierra Ranch, Mooi River.

FOX and Sierra Ranch have teamed up to bring you this fun and unique extreme weekend for the whole family.

The Saturday sees two Mountain bike races of 40 km and 20 km, with a five kilometre fun-ride. FOX will be giving the first 250 entrants to the two races a free FOX MTB riding jersey valued at over R200 each. There will be refreshments on sale afterwards and plenty of entertainment including the FOX Brigade for the kids and BMX displays. There will be tons of FOX giveaways on the day. On the Sunday a MotoCross Hare Scramble will take place from 9 am.

There will be prizes for the first three riders across the line and tons of lucky draw prizes will be up for grabs.

Registration takes place between 7 and 8.30 am on Saturday, with the racing starting at 9 am.
