Hillcrest panga attack victim aims to emigrate

2013-04-05 00:00

AFTER being attacked by two men wielding pangas and knives, a Hillcrest resident wants to emigrate, even though a suspect has been arrested.

The attack, which happened on March 2, was caught on a home CCTV system.

The footage shows Ryan Sutherland being hacked by a panga-wielding thug. He gets up, staggers around and one of the intruders stabs him with a knife.

The attack took place while his two sons — aged six and two — were asleep and resulted in his seven-months pregnant wife giving birth prematurely. The baby is healthy.

Sutherland said he was fed up with crime and thinking of moving to Canada.

“I’m seriously considering it given the level of crime that we have in our country,” he said, adding that he had heard of other attacks on homes in Hillcrest.

He said he been a victim of crime “multiple times”.

“I can’t think of putting my family through that again,” he said. “We don’t know yet where we could go, but Canada is a possibility.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said said rumours of a “panga gang” operating in the area were unfounded.

Mdunge yesterday said a 29-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the attack and had appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court. The case was adjourned to April 16.
