Hilton: Armed pair rape woman at church

2011-11-16 00:00

A WOMAN was raped in broad daylight at a church in Hilton on Monday afternoon.

The woman works at the church.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the 29-year-old woman was attacked by a man with a firearm and another armed with a knife who demanded money from her.

“When she told them that she does not know where the money was one of the suspects forced her to the floor, assaulted her with his fists and allegedly raped her,” said Jeevan.

The victim screamed for help and the gardener found her on the floor. He was also assaulted.

The men ransacked the church and fled with a microwave, amplifier, DVD player, kettle and both the victims’ cellphones.

The police are still searching for the two suspects.

The assistant pastor at the church, who is not to be named in order to protect the woman’s identity, told The Witness he was happy with the response of the police and Red Alert security.

“My message is that we cannot live in fear. We all know the challenges in society and each one makes a difference, and I think we should stand together at this time especially as we’re approaching Christmas,” the pastor said.

The police urge anyone with information to call investigating officer Constable Thobani Nxele at 033 845 6525 or 072 108 1738.
