Hilton Arts Festival 2010

2010-09-11 00:00

WITH under a week to go to the opening of the 2010 Witness Hilton festival, there’s still time to book for theatre performances, dance and music productions and enjoy the best in South African Theatre.

There’s Ubom!’s Breed on Saturday and Sunday in the Memorial Hall, which stars Andrew Buckland and tells the story of people who find themselves isolated and separated by their differences. Through circumstances beyond their control a violin-playing girl, squatters in an old farmhouse, and an angry man with a dog are caught together in a desperate situation. Breed uncovers the absurdities and ambiguities of South African life.

Duet for One is set to challenge serious theatre goers — a Kickstart production starring Clare Mortimer and Michael Richard, Duet is an absorbing and fascinating play about a virtuoso violinist stricken with multiple sclerosis and her relationship with her psychiatrist — it’s on for one show only, on Saturday at 10 am in the main theatre.

Normality, originally in Afrikaans, has been hailed by the critics as a tour de force, transporting the audience into a make-believe world which so accurately mirrors real life that the lines become blurred and opinions and perceptions are changes in the process. The play was awarded the Hidden Gem Award at the Edinburgh festival in 2009.
