Hilton, Michaelhouse cricket play-off

2014-02-14 00:00

IN a repeat of last year’s Sunfoil Schools Night League final, Michaelhouse will meet Hilton College to determine the premier T20 cricket school in the Midlands at the Pietermaritzburg Oval tonight.

In an earlier round robin T20 game between the two schools, Hilton came out on top in the competition that also featured Maritzburg College and St Charles College.

Hilton elected to bat first and compiled 116/3 with Jarred Eddy (43) and Ross Talmage (25) top scoring, both at a rate just under a run per ball. The target was well within the reach of the powerful Michaelhouse batting line-up, but the pundits did not reckon on Hilton’s desire to win.

Restricting Michaelhouse to 107/7 in their allotted 20 overs, Hilton claimed a 10-run victory and the right to contest the final at the Oval tonight.

The other match saw Maritzburg College down St Charles in a close game that was decided by the penultimate ball of the match. Batting first, St Charles scored 107/8 with Zach Kousouris (37 off 30 balls) and Marc Noble (31 off 26 balls) top scoring and David Small knocking over four wickets for a stingy eight runs.

College set about chasing down the target with purpose, but had to rely on the bat of opener Brad Hope to see them home against some tight bowling.

Not scoring as freely as the St Charles batsmen, Hope played a more conservative innings for his 49 not out in 59 balls.

Treverton were due to face Howick yesterday in the secondary schools final, while Merchiston takes on Cordwalles in the primary schools final which will be a curtain-raiser to the top tier schools final this afternoon.
