Hilton: Suspected criminal killed in shootout with cops

2013-02-04 00:00

A SUSPECTED criminal was killed in a shootout with police in Hilton yesterday morning.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said officers from the K-9 Unit had been called to help a security company that had arrested a man found with housebreaking tools in Groenekloof Road.

“Whilst questioning the man, police saw a vehicle travelling on the road without lights and they immediately gave chase,” said Jeevan.

Once the men in the car saw the police, they stopped, got out, and fled while the officers gave chase on foot.

“During the chase, one of the suspects turned and fired at the police, who were forced to retaliate and returned fire, hitting one of the suspects in the shoulder,” she said.

The suspect who was shot died on the scene, while the one who was armed managed to escape.

Police later established that the suspect’s car, a white Ford Sierra, had been stolen from the Alexandra Road area on Wednesday last week.

“Further investigation has also revealed that the two suspects in the car had initially dropped off the first suspect who was in possession of the housebreaking tools, and were returning to pick him up when they were spotted by the police.”
