THE Hilton College Marimba Band are pretty upbeat after winning two categories at an international competition held in Johannesburg last weekend.

Up against stiff competiton from marimba bands from around South Africa, Nigeria, Botswana, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, the boys showed they had what it takes.

Hilton College won the categories “Strictly Classical Small Ensemble” and the “Battle of the Bands Open Category”.

They were also placed second in the “Battle of the Bands” high school category and were ranked in the top three internationally, along with Watershed from Zimbabwe and the Hillbrow Community Centre.

This success comes hot on the heels of their recent trip to China, where they played to international audiences who praised the enthusiasm and spontaneity of the band.

• Marimba lovers are in for a special treat this Women’s Day on Friday, as Hilton College are putting on a music concert with musical items showcased from their accomplished music ensembles ranging from jazz to the classics. Tickets can be bought from the Hilton College theatre at R40 per person. Call 033 383 0126 or e-mail tickets@hiltoncollege.com for more information.
