Hilton could surprise Glenwood

2012-03-17 00:00

ALL the major schools have rugby matches today, and while some have already had up to five games, others will be playing their first match today.

There will be three matches where large crowds can be expected.

The match on Gilfillans at Hilton, where they play Westville, should draw many supporters from both schools.

Hilton, after a couple of practice games, face a side that have played two matches and were involved in the Voortrekker Night series where they played three games. But these were not full matches. The win against Glenwood last week will have given Westville confidence, and with a settled side they will likely be hard to beat.

Hilton must not be underestimated as they have pace out wide and a mobile but robust pack. Where Westville were particularly successful last week was in not being intimidated by the Glenwood forwards. This will be a good contest today and if Hilton can win their fair share of good ball, they could surprise.

Glenwood have not only home ground advantage, but also the advantage of being a side that have played four matches in the Argentine, although not necessarily the combination that will be playing today.

Michaelhouse, with very little preparation in comparison, will be up against it as they run out for their first match. Glenwood, who were stung by dheir defeat last Saturday, will want to eliminate mistakes that were made last week and they must be seen as overwhelming favourites.

Northwood travel to the capital to play Maritzburg College. This fixture has not been played for a number of years, so it is pleasing that Northwood are back in the mix, playing most of the top schools in the province. College have also had three matches in the Voortrekker Night series, but will be in their first full fixture today. Northwood suffered a heavy loss last week against Kearsney and they will hope to put in a better performance in this game.

College will have worked hard to eliminate the mistakes made in the Nite series and could produce some exciting play.

Kearsney will host George Campbell and indications are that the latter have a very competitive pack and they could make life difficult for the home side. Campbell will be playing their third full match and Kearsney their second.

The matches at the Voortrekker Festival were previewed yesterday but this is a reminder that school rugby is on the go for the duration of today at Voortrekker.
