Hilton does well at School Rowing championship

2013-03-05 00:00

THE South African Schools Rowing Championships is a premier event in the school’s rowing calendar. Rowing is not a popular sport amongst KZN schools, probably because of the expense and it is in Gauteng where most schools participating in rowing are found.

Hilton, the only KZN school represented at the 39th School Rowing championship, which was held on the Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria, did well to come back with two golds and two bronze medals. There were 46 schools and clubs from Southern Africa, with about 1000 competitors, over the three days of the regatta this past weekend.

Kyle Schoonbee won gold in the open sculls and he paired up with Emile McLennan to win the open double sculls. Matthew Gearing was third in the open sculls. The open quad team of Schoonbee, McLennan, Joshua Hodgson, Stuart Bulterman and cox Daniel van Hoesslin gained a bronze in the event.

Regional selections take place next weekend followed by national selections on the weekend of March 17.
